Report CoverPublic Water Supply Distribution Systems:Assessing and Reducing Risks (2005)

Protecting and maintaining water distributions systems are crucial to ensuring quality water. Epidemiological and surveillance data of sporadic cases of waterborne diseases and health effects from chemical and microbial contamination can be linked to problems in water distribution systems. After reviewing issues presented in nine EPA white papers, the authoring committee of this report identifies trends in the deterioration of drinking water quality water supply distribution systems and identifies and prioritize issues of greatest concern. The study committee identified the following as the highest pirorities based on their associated potential health risks: cross connections and backflow, new or repaired water mains, and improperly maintained water storage facilities. Premise plumbing and distribution system operator training, issues not considered in the nine white papers, should also be accorded high priority. A comprehensive final report that evaluates approaches for risk characterization and identifies strategies that could be considered to reduce the risks posed by water-quality deteriorating events will be issued in 2006.
